How-to: Host the Perfect Picnic

How-to: Host the Perfect Picnic

From Zoom meetings to texts to a steady stream of emails, we find ourselves needing a quiet respite away from these digital filled days. And with summer in full swing, sunny days and clear skies have us dreaming of the outdoor activities of seasons past. Cue, the perfect, socially responsible summer venture – the picnic.

Not only is picnicking a quintessential summertime activity, it just so happens to be a picturesque way to take a break from the stress of day-to-day life. Even better, when done right, it tends to produce that coveted feeling of living luxuriously slow that seems to happen when you’re on vacation. So, as a friendly reminder that there is still some beauty and normalcy to be had in these tough times, we thought we’d share some tips and tricks to host the perfect picnic.

Prepare to Distance

Unless you're picnicking with members in your household, make sure you bring separate blankets. You’ll also want to measure out enough space to accommodate everyone safely. Get creative with how you do this. You can utilize what you’re already bringing to help you space plan. For instance, the average length of a baguette is 26” – make sure individuals are about three baguettes away, and you’ll be over six feet apart to maintain a healthy distance.

Plan Your Menu

To make sure your picnic is as pandemic proof as possible, prep ahead by creating single-serving charcuterie boards (if you decide to prepare food day-of, be sure to bring gloves to avoid spreading germs). Many markets now sell mini dips and spreads in environmentally friendly packaging. When it comes to refreshments, canned wines or bottled beverages are easy-to-chill and a great choice to limit repeated touching since they are already individually portioned. Another option is to coordinate the menu and have everyone pack their own food. To add some friendly competition, select a theme, and compare final results. Finally, hosting a picnic doesn’t mean you have to prepare food at all – ordering takeaway not only saves time, but it is also a great way to support your local business.

 Stay Safe by Sanitizing

Quite possibly the most important part of picnicking during a pandemic, don’t forget to pack disinfecting wipes, gloves, and hand sanitizer. As soon as you arrive, set up a simple station of cleaning supplies. Not only is it convenient, but it also serves as a friendly reminder to keep hands clean, as you enjoy your time.

Indulge A Little

Just because you're away from the comforts of home does not mean dining alfresco has to be gritty. Bring your own cheese board or cloth napkins to create a picturesque picnic. Use edible flowers in your spread for an extra luxurious touch. When it comes to picnicking, don't be afraid to indulge a little and celebrate. Oh, and bring dessert.

Make Space to Slow Down

In these often tough times, it’s important to make space to slow down. We’ve found that fresh air, tasty food, and good company is one of the best forms of self-care. So, before you head out, commit to being present. You might be surprised at how much positivity a simple day away can bring. Finally, if you aren’t familiar with the joys of a well-planned picnic, now might be the perfect time to take the leap.
